Differences between the RaQ 4i and the RaQ 4r

While the software features are the same for the RaQ 4i and the RaQ 4r, there is one difference in the Raq4i and Raq4r hardware.

The Cobalt RaQ 4r includes software RAID 1, which ensures the availability of content in the event of disk failure through data redundancy over two disks.

What is the Sun Cobalt™ RaQ server appliance?

The Sun RaQ is a server appliance for Internet Service Providers (ISPs). It can host up to 200 individual websites or it can be dedicated to a single medium or large customer. This versatility opens up tremendous opportunity for service provider to invest in a single piece of hardware while migrating business customers up to dedicated servers.

At a single-rack unit high and with minimal power requirements (50 watts), Sun RaQ server appliances can be stacked 40 high in a standard 19-inch rack enclosure. In fact, they can be pre-installed. All hardware and software configuration is remote, so when a client requests new service, the new site can be configured on the fly through a standard browser. All you'll need is credit approval. That includes eCommerce sites. The Sun RaQ server appliance includes: root access, FTP, Web, email and virtual domain support.

Industry-Leading Ease of Use

Unique to the Sun RaQ server appliance is the integration of application and system functions into a unified easy-to-use user interface (UI); if users don't want to deal with Linux, they don't have to. This valuable software layer enables installation in 15 minutes, so you can respond quickly to new customers - even while they are still on the phone. The browser-based UI shields the administrator from technical complexities and minimizes the need for trained staff. It also enables customer-managed systems, which reduces administration support costs.

Web Serving
The Sun Cobalt™ RaQ 4 server appliances offer integrated support for HTTP/1.1, Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and Perl scripting.

Virtual Domain Support
The Sun RaQ 4 offers name-based virtual domains (single IP address for multiple domains) or IP-based virtual domains (one IP address for each domain).

Bandwidth Management
On a per-IP-address basis, traffic can be limited to a pre-selected throughput rate. .

SQL Database Support
The Sun RaQ 4 server appliance integrates the InterBase open-source database, a powerful, high-performance SQL database designed for business-critical, network and Web-based applications on the Sun RaQ server appliance.

Active Server Pages (ASP) and PHP Support

Development Environment
The Sun RaQ 4 server appliances include a full suite of standard development tools, including C & C++ compilers, gdb debugger, libraries, X11 libraries & PostgreSQL DBMS. ISPs or their clients can use these tools to build custom, value-added services.

Where to Download OS Restore CDs

You can download all the Cobalt RAQ Restore CDs from Sun Microsystems.

They are available in .ISO format. You will need to use a cdrom burning utility that supports .ISO such as Nero or NTI. There are add-ons for Windows XP that support it such as ISORecorder [1] (http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm) which is free.
